The Cape Codgers is a coed slow pitch senior softball league based in Falmouth, Massachusetts on Cape Cod. We offer 2 divisions of play for anyone 54 years old and older.The Codgers' regular season runs from May to September with a fall ball season with 2 divisions that run to November. In winter 2023 we added a weekly indoor pickup games. Optional softball, volunteer, and other activities continue all year long.Our membership is open to players of all talent and fitness levels, and a variety of time and participation commitments. Our mission is to create a welcoming environment for seniors seeking an opportunity to have some fun, get or stay in better physical shape, and create new, lifelong friendships. The Cape Codgers League began in the spring of 2008 as a group of twenty guys playing pickup games and eventually challenging other local softball teams on the Upper Cape. In 2009, the league expanded to three teams totaling about sixty players. That year, our teams played each other in a 16-game season including a league championship. By 2019, we had increased our participation to over 150 players assigned to 2 divisions and enjoyed a great season of friendship, competition and fun! League members also participate in off season activities including weekly evening workouts at the Falmouth Rec Center (sometimes followed by "strategy sessions" at a local pub over pizza). Winter Ball is also becoming more popular every year with batting Practice and Turf Ball games held at the Falmouth Sports Center.Autumn brings our Fall Ball season and we continue to play competitive and fun Team softball until the weather turns— sometimes until Thanksgiving! There is also the end-of-year "Codger Family Cookout” and awards ceremony as well as our yearly golf tournament. Finally, each year we celebrate the Holidays with our annual Codgers Banquet, an evening of great food video and drink, video highlights from the season and dancing with invited spouses, family and friends to live music
There were nearly as many knee braces as baseball gloves at the Falmouth Heights Field one Saturday morning in the first East Vs. West Challenge between the Cape Codgers and the Backoffice Associates. The showdown was one of two matchups in town, as Falmouth’s 65-over team took on the 75-over squad from Backoffice Associates in the Heights, while the Codgers’ 60-plus team played the 70-plus team at the WHOI Fields in Woods Hole. Although Backoffice Associates won both game results were irrelevant in the big picture.
Codgers’ President Chip Mansfield had assembled the teams to celebrate the sport, and one of the Cape’s iconic people in the game, Dick Sullivan. Mr. Sullivan donned a Codgers cap during a post game ceremony and thanked the assembly, of nearly 100 players and spectators, for the outpouring of gratitude and support. “Without his help, we wouldn’t be here today,” Mansfield said. “He helped us get our program off the ground and supported us every step of the way.” Falmouth’s Cape Codgers group has exploded in popularity over the past few years. The club began playing ball just six years ago, and over that time has gone from a group that was able to field two teams to having over 100 players and six teams. The Codgers have also supported the Falmouth Youth Baseball league, and we’ve held several fundraisers for charity, including the March of Dimes and our Annual Home Run derby for Children with Pediatric Cancer.
